MUMBAI: A massive volunteer-driven movement for water conservation has taken shape across India, with the Reliance Foundation leading the #Water4Life campaign , launched on World Water Day 2026.

In just 10 days, the campaign has engaged over 33,000 volunteers, resulting in the cleaning of more than 1,400 water bodies across 108 districts in 15 states and one Union Territory. The initiative spans over 912 villages, marking one of the largest community-led environmental efforts in recent times.

The campaign focuses on restoring and sustaining water ecosystems-including lake shores, beaches, riverbanks, and ponds-through a combination of on-ground clean-up drives and long-term community engagement. Volunteers collected over 85,000 kg of waste, including plastic and other pollutants, while also working to restore water flow channels.

Prominent locations covered under the initiative include the Narmada River ghats, Dipeswar Talab in Pratapgarh, tributaries of the Godavari River basin, Kochi Beach, and Rankala Lake in Maharashtra.

The movement has drawn participation from farmers, women's groups, youth, healthcare workers, civil society organisations, and corporate volunteers, reflecting a broad-based commitment to water conservation. In Kerala, fishing communities and sanitation workers collaborated to clean Kochi Beach, while in Karnataka, schoolchildren in Belagavi actively participated in awareness and clean-up efforts.

A notable feature of the campaign is the involvement of 2,500 Village Climate Champions, trained by Reliance Foundation to promote water literacy, waste management, and sustainable practices at the grassroots level.

Building on its rural transformation work across over 91,000 villages, Reliance Foundation highlighted that its water conservation initiatives have already helped harvest more than 2,000 lakh cubic metres of water, positively impacting millions of lives.

The foundation emphasized that #Water4Life is envisioned as a long-term, participatory movement, aiming to strengthen community ownership of water resources and contribute to India's broader goal of water security.
