Legend of Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple
The Sriranga Mahathmiyam states that Lord Brahma and later the Ikshvaku dynasty worshipped the idol of Lord Ranganatha, a reclining form of Vishnu, which appeared from the "Churning of the Ocean".
Lord Rama gave Vibhishana the idol as a thank you after defeating Ravana.
Vibhishana set the statue on the banks of the Kaveri River to offer his evening prayers while returning to Lanka. He discovered that it had gotten permanently glued to the ground when he attempted to lift it once more.
The Lord declared that although he wanted to remain in this lovely location, he would continue to bless Vibhishana's realm by turning south toward Lanka.
It was probably built during the Sangam period (3rd century BCE to 3rd century CE) as a modest shrine.
A temple at Srirangam is mentioned in early Tamil literature, like the Silappadikaram. The Chola King Dharma Varma is credited with building the first significant stone edifice.
Tradition has it that the original building was destroyed by the Kaveri River's floods.
Later, King Killivalavan of the Chola dynasty "rediscovered" it and restored it, laying the groundwork for what would grow to be a vast temple-city.
