India vs England Test Series Renamed Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy

Exciting news in the world of cricket unfolds as the historic Test series between India and England will now be named the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy, according to the BBC report.

This change honors two of the game's greatest cricket icons: Sachin Tendulkar, who holds the record for the most runs in Test history with 15,921 runs across 200 matches, and James Anderson, the top wicket-taker for England, who recently finished his career with 704 wickets from 188 Tests. Tendulkar retired in 2013, while Anderson stepped back from the game in 2024.

This new trophy represents a significant change from the past. Since 2007, the Pataudi Trophy has awarded for the Test series in England, celebrating 75 years of intense competition beginning in 1932. Consequently, when the series takes place in India, the series name will be as usual, ‘Anthony de Mello Trophy,’ named after a past BCCI president.

The decision to retire the Pataudi Trophy has stirred up quite a bit of discontent among cricket fans and players alike. Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar criticized the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), labeling the move as "disturbing."

In his piece for Sportstar, he pointed out that it's quite unusual to retire a trophy named after a legend, and he feels this decision shows a lack of respect for the Pataudi family. Notably, both Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and his father represented India and England in the cricketing world. Gavaskar has urged future Indian players approached with such an honor to turn it down, warning that they could face similar disrespect.

Sharmila Tagore, the veteran actress and widow of the late Tiger Pataudi, also shared her sadness over this decision. In an interview with Hindustan Times, she explained that the ECB notified their son, Saif Ali Khan, about the trophy’s retirement.

She emphasized that it's now up to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to determine if they want to keep Tiger Pataudi’s legacy alive or let it fade. While renaming the series as the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy might shine a light on modern legends, it raises serious questions about how we honor the rich legacy of cricket.
