Jasprit Bumrah recently broke silence about a choice he made regarding India's Test cricket captaincy. Even though he was the captaincy frontrunner by the selection committee for the India tour of England 2025, he decided to turn it down.
With both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from Test cricket, it seemed like Bumrah was the natural successor, especially since he had already captained the team in three Test matches. However, a significant back injury sustained by him during the Sydney Test led him to reconsider taking on this role.
Bumrah emphasised that part-time leadership could disrupt team consistency and dynamics. “It’s not fair for the team if I lead for three matches, and someone else has to take over for the other two,” he stated. His priority seems to be creating a stable and fair environment for his teammates.

Bumrah recently shared that his decision regarding captaincy came from a place of wanting what is best for the team. Even though the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) was ready to let him take on the role, he felt it wouldn’t be fair to accept it if he couldn’t fully commit, especially since he's dealing with a recurring stress fracture in his back. After discussions with doctors, physios, and surgeons, he realised leading the team during a challenging Test series would be impractical.
He acknowledged pushing himself too hard might jeopardise his future across all formats of the game. After having missed out on important matches like the Champions Trophy and parts of the IPL, he acknowledges that another injury could seriously affect his career.
Bumrah admitted, "Captaincy meant a lot to me. I had worked very hard for it. But sometimes, you have to look at the bigger picture," he further stated, "I love cricket more than captaincy."
