Mumbai Indians History

Many legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, and Ricky Ponting have been associated with this franchise, which explains the unparalleled love this team receives from their fans on social media. Currently, the team is filled with power hitters like Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Tilak Varma.
In September 2007, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made public its plans to launch the Indian Premier League (IPL), a Twenty20 cricket tournament set to debut in 2008. By January 2008, the BCCI disclosed the owners of eight franchises based in various cities. The Mumbai franchise was acquired by Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) for a staggering $111.9 million, establishing it as the priciest team in the league’s history. RIL, under the ownership of Mukesh Ambani, secured the franchise rights for 10 years, solidifying its presence in the league.
The Initial Struggle of Mumbai Indians and Mumbai Indians Players
Experts considered Mumbai Indians one of the strongest units in the IPL’s inaugural season, with Sachin Tendulkar (their Icon Player), Sanath Jayasuriya, Shaun Pollock, Lasith Malinga, Robin Uthappa, and Harbhajan Singh in their ranks. However, while on the one hand, the team had tonnes of experience, on the other, they lacked speed.
While much was expected from Tendulkar, the veteran Indian batsman was out injured for most of the season. To make matters worse, his deputy, spinner Harbhajan Singh, was suspended from the tournament after slapping bowler Sreesanth in a match against Kings XI Punjab. The team ended up in the fifth position.
The 2009 edition was a similar story as MI and its players struggled with injuries and wrong player choices by the team management. They could only finish seventh in the league.
