The 27-year-old Murali comes from a sports-loving family in Palakkad, Kerala. His father, S. Murali, works in the Indian Railways and is a former triple jumper who even won a silver medal at the South Asian Games. He is also Murali’s first and main coach and played an important role in his training and career. While his mother K.S. Bijimol is also a former athlete. She was an 800m runner and won a silver medal at the 1992 Asian Junior Athletics Championships. Murali also has a sister, Sreeparvathy, who competes in multiple track and field events and is currently pursuing medicine (MBBS) as well.

Early Life

Murali was born on March 27, 1999, in Palakkad, Kerala. Since both his parents were athletes, he developed an interest in sports at a very young age. He used to accompany his father to training sessions. Murali’s father first noticed his speed as a sprinter and later guided him towards long jump. Sreeshankar started training under his father while he was still in school, and during his teen years he traveled across India for competitions. Murali completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kanjikode, and later earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Government Victoria College. He balanced his studies with sports and also cleared engineering and medical entrance exams but chose to pursue his dreams of becoming a professional athlete.

Murali started his senior athletics career in 2018 and first gained attention after jumping 7.99m at the Federation Cup in Patiala. He was then selected for his performance at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. However, he had to miss the event because of appendicitis and underwent surgery just days before the Games. Despite this major setback, Murali returned and won a bronze medal at the Asian Junior Championships and later finished sixth at the 2018 Asian Games.

The same year, Murali broke the Indian national record with a jump of 8.20m. He represented India at the World Athletics Championships in Doha in 2019. Although he didn’t qualify for the final, this experience helped him prepare for international events. Sreeshankar was impressive at the CWG 2026, as he reached the finals and produced the best jump of 8.09 metres. He led the competition after the first three rounds, but Jamaica’s Tajay Gayle overtook him in the fourth round with a jump of 8.15 metres.
