India's legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will miss the entire Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26 season. An unexpected knee injury forced the 39-year-old to undergo surgery.
Ashwin was set to make history. He was slated to become the first capped Indian player to play in the BBL. His commitment to the Sydney Thunder franchise was for the full BBL|15 season.
This injury is a major blow to both the player and Australia’s domestic cricket league.

Ashwin sustained the injury during a training session in Chennai. He was preparing for the upcoming season. Subsequent scans showed a significant knee issue that required immediate surgery.

Sydney Thunder’s Response and Future Hopes
The Sydney Thunder franchise expressed its devastation at the news. General Manager Trent Copeland confirmed the club remains supportive.
He stated the team hopes to build a long-term relationship with Ashwin. The franchise is still considering bringing him on board in a non-playing, advisory capacity later in the BBL|15 season.
Ashwin himself hinted at this possibility. He said he would love to be around the group if his rehab schedule permits and doctors clear him for travel. Meanwhile, Ashwin’s withdrawal also means he misses the upcoming Hong Kong Sixes tournament.
Former India batter Robin Uthappa replaced Ashwin in that squad. The Sydney Thunder must now find an injury replacement player before the BBL season begins in December.
