Early days

Shubman Gill was born in Fazilka, a city in Punjab, to Lakhwinder Gill and Kirat Gill. He has a sister named Shahneel Gill. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, once spoke about his son's passion for the game.

His father, an agriculturist, would ask the hired people to help on the farm to throw balls at Gill to help him practice batting. Lakhwinder was convinced of his talent and moved the family to Mohali and rented a house near the PCA Stadium.

While he was anonymously working out at the small academy opposite Mohali’s PCA Stadium, former Indian pacer Karsan Ghavri held a bowling camp for talented seamers where he needed kids to bat against his bowlers. And incidentally, that’s when young Shubman came into the picture.

In an Under-16 Inter-District tournament, he scored 351 runs in one inning. Even on his Under-16 state debut for Punjab, he smashed an unbeaten double-century. All this came in the year 2014. He made his List A debut for Punjab in the 2016-17 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He made his first-class debut for Punjab in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy in the same year.
As the years passed, the young gun was making an impact with his games.

In 2018, Shubman was named to India C’s squad for the 2018-19 Deodhar Trophy. The form led him to make an entry in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy.

In September 2022, Glamorgan enlisted Gill as their overseas player for the remainder of the 2022 County Championship season. He made his debut at Sophia Gardens against Worcestershire.

With his batting powers at the domestic level, he impressed the selectors and was given a chance to play on the U19 side in 2017. He was named the vice-captain of India’s squad for the 2018 under-19 Cricket World Cup.

Gill made the entire nation proud with his batting skills on the international level. He was the leading run-scorer for India in the World Cup, with 372 runs. He was also named the player of the tournament. The young talent was also called up for India (senior team). He traveled to New Zealand in 2018 but couldn't make a debut.

Gill made his Test debut for India on 26 December 2020, against Australia, and in the fourth Test at the Gabba, he scored 91 runs to help India win the series. Gill also scored his first ODI century against Zimbabwe in Harare on 22 August 2022.

On 18 January 2023, Shubman Gill scored a double century against New Zealand. He is currently the youngest batsman in men’s cricket to score a double century in ODIs. Now, Shubman has become 5th Indian batsman to hit a double century in an ODI.

Following Gill’s Player of the Series award in the U-19 World Cup, he attracted the interest of four franchises during the IPL 2018 auction, including Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals,Kolkata Knight Riders, and Delhi Capitals. However, in the end, KKR made the final bid and snatched him for Rs 1.80 crore.

In the season, he has scored 296 runs at an impressive average of 32.88 from 14 matches. The 24-year-old right-handed opener had a stellar season with the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League 2022. He helped his team, led by Hardik Pandya to win the IPL 2022 title.

Shubman Gill assumed the role of captain for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024 following Hardik Pandya’s transfer to Mumbai Indians.

The GUJ franchise paid Rs 16.50 Cr to acquire Shubman Gill’s services in the 2025 IPL Auction. His final IPL game was against KKR at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India, in April 2025. He scored 90 runs off of 55 balls.
