Umran is an Indian fast bowler with raw speed and a lethal pace. He belongs to Jammu & Kashmir and made his debut for Jammu & Kashmir in the 2020-21 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He made his debut in List A Cricket in the 2020-21 Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the 2021 IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad lost their key bowler T Natarajan due to him being tested for COVID. This is when Umran Malik got an opportunity to make his IPL debut.

In IPL 2024, he was retained by SRH owners for a sum of 4 cr. In 2022, Umran was also selected for the Indian cricket team for the five-match T20I series against South Africa.

Early Life

From playing tennis ball cricket in the narrow streets of Jammu to representing India on the international stage, Umran Malik's journey is nothing short of inspiring.

Randhir Singh Manhas, Umran’s coach, took him as a ward when Umran was just 17. He had come to the Maulana Azad Stadium in Jammu where he met Manhas in the Cricket Coaching Centre.

Mahas has said during the beginning, that Umran was very lazy and not very hard working despite having a natural talent and passion for the game.

Manhas, who is also known as ‘Rajan Sir’ by his students, recalled that Umran got selected for the U-19 Jammu & Kashmir Team, but hardly received any chance to play. He also says that Umran developed his speed by bowling with tennis bowls and playing regular tennis ball Cricket.

Umran, who had been a class X Dropout and came from a humble background, never found it easy to play Cricket but his father’s support did help him come ahead. Ajay Ratra, the current coach of Assam and former Indian cricketer was impressed by Umran when he saw him in the nets during a Ranji Trophy Match.

Things took a very different turn for Umran as former Indian bowler Irfan Pathan took him as his ward. Pathan believed that while Umran had a great pace, his bowling action needed some work. In 2019, he wanted to give Umran maximum time for practice, but could not due to the abrogation of Article 370.

International Career

In May 2022, Malik was selected to represent India in their Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the series versus South Africa. Shortly after, he was also included in India’s T20I squad for the two-match series against Ireland. Malik marked his T20I debut on 26th June 2022, playing against Ireland.

Later, in November 2022, he made his One Day International (ODI) debut for the Indian cricket team in a match against New Zealand, where he took the wicket of Devon Conway, securing his first ODI dismissal.

Umran Malik IPL Career

Malik made it to the limited-overs team of Jammu and Kashmir in Early 2021. He was a brute force in both the ODI and T20 format and managed to get in IPL 2021 as a Net bowler due to his consistent pace bowling.

Umran made his debut against Kolkata Knight Riders and bowled a 151.03 Kmph delivery, a speed that no other Indian Bowler could touch in the 2021 IPL season. He later broke his record by bowling a 153 kmph delivery against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the same season. In that same match, he clocked various deliveries at a pace of around and above 150 kmph. On April 27, 2022, during the 2022 Indian Premier League match against the Gujarat Titans, Malik achieved his inaugural five-wicket haul in Twenty20 cricket. In IPL 2024, he is retained by SRH for INR 4 crore.
