30 April 2026, AU: Substantial progress has been reported in the delivery of the National Biosecurity Strategy Action Plan 2024 with 86% of activities either in progress or completed by December 2025.
The overarching National Biosecurity Strategy 2022-2032 (NBS) - endorsed by all agriculture ministers and released in 2022 - drives a connected, nationally coordinated biosecurity system, bringing governments, industry and communities together around shared priorities and responsibilities.
It's supported by the NBS Action Plan 2024, and partners are delivering practical initiatives that strengthen prevention, preparedness and response to biosecurity risks, and improve how effort is aligned across jurisdictions and sectors.
The release of the inaugural NBS Annual Report 2025 captures how agreed national priorities are progressing. Highlights include:
- a shared biosecurity culture that's supported through national forums and events that bring partners together to address challenges and drive action, including the biennial National Biosecurity Forum
- communication and engagement activities such as the highly compliant importer scheme and the biosecurity business pledge are increasing awareness of biosecurity risks and encouraging positive biosecurity practices across the system
- workforce capability has been improved through access to biosecurity training, including national online training and updated programs delivered through the Biosecurity Training Centre
- partnerships with First Nations have been strengthened through the Indigenous Ranger Biosecurity Program, and support on Country surveillance and local capability, and,
- the national readiness has been enhanced through coordinated exercises, progress on livestock traceability, and more consistent approaches to managing plant animal and environmental biosecurity threats.
Also released is the Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting and Improvement (MERI) Framework, which strengthens NBS implementation by setting a clear, consistent approach to tracking outcomes, learning from experience and improving delivery over time.
Together, the NBS, Action Plan, Annual Report and MERI Framework provide a strong foundation for the next phase of national biosecurity reform and continued system-wide improvement.
