Granted patents rise from 56 in FY16 to 1,334 in FY26 across automotive and farm businesses

25 April 2026, Mumbai: Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) said its patent portfolio increased over the past decade, supported by investment in research and development and the Make in India initiative.

The company said the number of granted patents increased from 56 in FY16 to 1,334 in FY26, representing growth of more than 20 times over the period.

As of March 2026, M&M's cumulative patent applications stood at 2,728. The company said the portfolio reflects its focus on innovation, engineering, and product development.

Of the 1,334 granted patents, around 60 percent are linked to the automotive business, while 40 percent relate to the farm business.

M&M also reported an improvement in its patent conversion ratio. The proportion of applications turning into granted patents rose from 8 percent in FY16 to more than 65 percent for applications filed over the last decade.

The company said the patent pipeline reflects the growth of its R&D capabilities and has helped develop technology-led products and customer solutions. The portfolio also includes filings from subsidiary Mahindra Electric Automobile Ltd..

The company also received industry recognitions in the past year, including the CII IP Award for Best Patent Portfolio, the CII Innovation Award as one of India's Top 50 Innovative Companies 2025, the CII National Award for Industry-Academia Partnership, the Questel IP Excellence Award, and recognition at the CMO Asia Awards 2025.
