Mallika Sherawat changed her name as her father was worried that she would ruin the family name: 'It was my struggle against patriarchy'
Mallika Sherawat earlier revealed about changing her name when she started working in the film industry. Reema Lamba was her birth name, and she ran away from home to start a career in Bollywood.
She had previously stated that she took her mother's maiden name, Sherawat, but she has now disclosed why she changed her name. In a recent interview, the actor stated that her father believed Mallika's entry into Bollywood would ruin the family's image, therefore she chose to disown the name.
She told Bollywood Bubble that 'It was my patriarchal revolt because my father said, 'Ye filmo mein jayegi, parivaar ka naam kharab karegi, main tereko disown karta hoon.'Maine kaha 'Main tumhara naam hi disown karti hoon,' . Mujhe disown karoge kya (I told him that I disown your name). Yes, you're my father; I respect and adore you; nonetheless, I'll use my mother's name.' So I used Sherawat because it's my mother's name.'
Mallika has appeared in a number of films since her debut. When she performed a few bold scenes with Emraan Hashmi in Murder, she drew the attention of the entire country. Khwahish, Welcome, Pyaar Ke Side Effects, and Dasavatharam were among her later films. She appeared in films such as The Myth, which she co-wrote with Jackie Chan, and Politics of Love, which she directed.
Her relationship with her family, on the other hand, remained complicated for years. Mallika stated in the same interview that the sourness has reduced with time. 'It's still not the best, but everyone softens with age,' she said.
