Higher education in Bihar is getting a massive 'block-level' upgrade. Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU), Darbhanga, has officially appointed professors-in-charge for 30 newly established government degree colleges.
This strategic move, announced via a notification on Tuesday, ensures these institutions are ready to welcome students for the upcoming academic session, bringing university-level learning to the doorsteps of rural Bihar.
The distribution of these 30 new colleges highlights a targeted effort to bridge the educational divide in the Mithila region. Begusarai leads the pack with 10 new colleges, followed by Darbhanga with eight. Madhubani will see seven new institutions, while Samastipur rounds out the list with five. By spreading these colleges across various blocks, the university and state government are making higher education accessible to thousands of students who previously had to travel long distances to reach a campus.
These institutions are the result of a significant state government resolution passed on April 30 under the 'Saat Nischay' (Seven Resolves) programme. This ambitious initiative aims to establish government degree colleges in 208 blocks across Bihar, specifically targeting remote and underserved areas. The goal is simple: ensure that geography is no longer a barrier to a degree, empowering students from the most rural corners of the state to pursue higher studies.
Building permanent college infrastructure takes time, but LNMU isn't letting that stall the academic calendar. For the upcoming session, these colleges will operate out of nearby +2 government schools. This temporary arrangement allows classes to begin immediately while permanent campuses are developed. Initially, the curriculum will focus on six core subjects: Hindi, English, History, Economics, Political Science, and Sociology—the foundational pillars of a liberal arts education.
To ensure these new classrooms aren't empty of experts, LNMU has already begun a recruitment drive. The university has issued a notice to increase the number of guest teacher vacancies specifically for the six core subjects offered. Furthermore, the leadership for these new colleges is being drawn from the existing talent pool; current principals and senior associate professors will take on the role of professors-in-charge, managing these new responsibilities alongside their current duties to provide experienced guidance during the transition.
