Crafting Affordable Elegance: How Chowkhat is Making Authentic Handmade Apparel Accessible

In a world where authentic handmade products often come with a hefty price tag, Chowkhat is redefining the narrative. This innovative brand is on a mission to make high-quality, handcrafted apparel accessible and affordable, challenging the norm that quality handmade goods must be expensive.

What began with a modest investment of 1 lakh INR has blossomed into a flourishing business generating 40-50 lakhs in revenue per month. This is the story of Chowkhat, a brand committed to affordability, craftsmanship, and social impact.

Chowkhat prioritised quality from the start

The brand’s first collection saw most of their initial funding go towards high-quality materials and production.

Instead of a big marketing push, they kept things lean, relying on the creativity and support of their inner circle for things like photos and promotion. This community-driven approach gave their brand a strong foundation, built on authenticity and a sense of shared effort.

Anuja Gupta, a co-founder, reflects on this period: "Our launch wasn't just our doing, it was a team effort. We had a limited budget, so we leaned on the generosity and skills of our friends and family. It made the whole experience even more special."

Now, Chowkhat's sales have skyrocketed

They started small, bringing in just 20,000 INR a month. But last year, things really took off. Their annual revenue went from 50 lakhs to hitting that same number every month! This impressive jump was fueled by a stronger product collection, smarter marketing, and a team that's fully invested in the brand. Looking ahead, Chowkhat is on track to hit a massive 15 crore target in the next year.

Anuja is thrilled with the growth: "We knew we had potential, but this surge in sales is amazing! It's a real credit to our team's hard work and the quality of our products."

Chowkhat's mission goes beyond fashion - it's about empowering people

The company provides a path forward for over 40 women, many of whom previously worked as domestic helpers. They offer training and opportunities, giving these women a chance to build a career. This dedication to social good extends to the heart of their business - the 5,000+ artisans, mainly from Lucknow. Chowkhat recognizes these craftspeople as the foundation of their brand's success. By ensuring timely payments and financial security, Chowkhat helps to create a sustainable livelihood for these artisans.

As Anuja explains, "Chowkhat isn't just about making beautiful clothes. It's about creating opportunities and giving back to the communities we work with. We're honored to be a part of that positive change."

Expanding Horizons with Strategic Investments

While not actively seeking external funding at the moment, Chowkhat is open to investment opportunities in the near future. The intended purpose for such funding would be to bolster inventory, particularly as the brand expands its presence on major platforms like Myntra. Higher inventory levels are essential to meet growing demand and achieve ambitious revenue goals.

“We're not just thinking about today,” says Anuja. “We're planning for the future, and that means making sure we have the resources to grow sustainably.”

Summer staples and skilled hands

Chowkhat's top sellers are Chikankari kurtis, perfect for the warmer months and everyday wear. Made from breathable fabrics like Modal, Mul Cotton, and Cotton, these pieces showcase the talent of the artisans Chowkhat partners with. These artisans, primarily located in and around Lucknow, number over 3,000!

"We work with over 3,000 artisans, many from Lucknow's historic centre,” says Anuja, adding, “We're invested in their success, both financially and in keeping these beautiful skills alive."

Chowkhat goes beyond just providing work, ensuring timely payments and even offering financial support in emergencies. This dedication helps these artisans continue their craft, support their families, and preserve this traditional art form.

From house helps to empowered career women

Chowkhat's Noida team is over 40 strong, and many of these women came from challenging backgrounds as domestic helpers. Through training and career opportunities, Chowkhat has empowered them to achieve financial security. These higher salaries allow them to support their families, improve their living conditions, and even invest in their children's education.

Anuja beams with pride about the impact: "Many of the women we hired faced difficult circumstances. Now, they're sending their kids to school, affording basic necessities, and feeling a newfound sense of accomplishment in their work. Seeing their transformation is incredibly rewarding."

Chowkhat's journey is an inspiration for women looking to blaze their own entrepreneurial trail. Anuja offers this final key piece of advice: "Perseverance is everything. There will be setbacks, moments when you feel like slowing down or even giving up. But if you push through, keep going, the rewards will come."
