700,000 passengers a day: Inside New Delhi station's ambitious revamp plan

Delhi: New Delhi Railway Station is undergoing a major transformation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with plans to significantly upgrade infrastructure, improve passenger experience and enhance safety through advanced technology.

Capacity expansion to meet rising demand

One of the key objectives of the redevelopment is to increase the station's capacity to handle up to 7 lakh passengers. As one of the busiest railway hubs in India, the station has been facing growing pressure due to rising passenger traffic, making expansion essential.

To support this, two new station buildings will be constructed near Platforms 1 and 16. These will replace older structures and provide a combined built-up area of approximately 1,09,000 square metres, creating additional space for passengers and operational facilities.

Smarter infrastructure and passenger flow

The redesigned station will include designated holding areas and apron zones to streamline passenger movement from elevated roads to platforms. These changes aim to reduce congestion and improve overall efficiency within the station premises.

Retail spaces and improved layout planning are also part of the project, ensuring that the station functions as a modern transit hub while offering convenience to travellers.

AI-powered surveillance for enhanced security

A major highlight of the redevelopment is the installation of around 1,500 AI-enabled cameras across the station. These cameras will monitor key areas such as platforms, entry and exit points, and concourses.

An advanced control room will process live feeds using real-time analytics, allowing authorities to detect unusual activities and respond quickly to potential safety risks. This system is expected to significantly strengthen security measures at the station.

Improved comfort and passenger facilities

The upgraded station will be fully air-conditioned, addressing long-standing concerns about passenger comfort, especially during peak seasons. New signage systems will be introduced to make navigation easier for travellers.

In addition, Bharat Taxi services will be integrated into the station, improving last-mile connectivity and making travel more seamless for passengers arriving in or departing from the capital.

The redevelopment plan also focuses on better integration with the Delhi Metro and other transport networks. This will ensure smoother transitions between different modes of transport and reduce travel time within the city.

Government push for modern railway hubs

Ashwini Vaishnaw has highlighted the progress of the project, showcasing the future design and ongoing construction work. The revamp is part of a larger national effort to modernise railway stations and introduce smart infrastructure across India.

Once completed, the upgraded New Delhi Railway Station is expected to set a benchmark for future developments, combining capacity expansion, technology and passenger-centric design to meet the demands of modern travel.
