A rare comeback: Why Drishyam 2 is returning to theatres

In a rare move in the film industry, a movie that was initially released on OTT is now heading for a theatrical release. Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has announced that ' Drishyam 2', directed by Jeethu Joseph, will soon be released in cinemas.

The development is being seen as a unique moment in Malayalam cinema, as films typically follow a theatrical-to-OTT release pattern. 'Drishyam 2' had premiered directly on streaming platforms in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The original 'Drishyam', released in 2013, is widely regarded as one of the finest thrillers in Malayalam cinema. The sequel, which continues the story of Georgekutty and his family, arrived eight years later and was met with overwhelming appreciation despite its OTT-only release.

Fans have long maintained that the film had the potential to cross the ₹100 crore mark had it been released in theatres. The upcoming theatrical run is now being viewed as both a celebration of the film's success and a strategic build-up to the third instalment.

Mohanlal shared the update as a surprise announcement ahead of 'Drishyam 3', and also unveiled a special poster for the re-release.

The film features a strong ensemble cast including Meena, Ansiba Hassan, Esther Anil, Siddique, Asha Sarath, Murali Gopy, Anjali Nair and Sai Kumar in key roles.

Much like its predecessor, the sequel is noted for its gripping narrative and an unpredictable climax.

Meanwhile, 'Drishyam 3' is scheduled for release on May 21 this year. The film is produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas.
