Prayagraj: Hundreds of devotees congregated at the Sangam in Prayagraj early Sunday morning to observe a sacred immersion on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, a day regarded as among the most auspicious in the Hindu calendar.
The festival is traditionally celebrated with specialised prayers, acts of philanthropy, and the acquisition of precious metals such as gold and silver.
"On this day, people take a holy dip here, perform charity and prayers," said Balmukund Kesarwani, a local priest. "They donate things like water in a pot, sugar sharbat, sattu, fans, etc., to the priest and become partakers of spiritual merit. After that, according to their capacity, people also buy gold and silver."
Devotees travelling to the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers emphasised the spiritual weight of their contributions.
"We have come to bathe at the Sangam," said Reena Gupta, a devotee. "On this day, a lot of donations are made according to one's faith. People donate items like fans, clay water pots, mangoes, and bel fruit according to their devotion. These are given to the priest, offered to God, and some are also immersed in the Ganga."
The day is specifically dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. According to religious tradition, honouring these deities on Akshaya Tritiya is believed to secure lasting prosperity and financial stability for the household.
Significantly, the entirety of Akshaya Tritiya is considered a "Siddha Muhurat," meaning the full day is viewed as spiritually favourable. Unlike many other religious observances, practitioners are not required to wait for a specific timeframe or window to perform their rituals or begin new ventures.
