An American Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on Wednesday night after experiencing a technical issue during its journey.
According to reports, Flight AA1461, a Boeing 737 MAX operating from Charlotte to Newark, landed safely after a problem was detected with its front tyre. Visuals from the airport showed emergency response vehicles surrounding the aircraft as ground crews assessed the situation.
Authorities from the Port Authority Police confirmed that the aircraft experienced a malfunction in its nose landing gear. Despite the scare, all passengers and crew members were safe, and no injuries were reported.
Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) explained that aircraft nose landing gear systems may have multiple tyres depending on the model, and such issues are handled through standard safety procedures.
The incident adds to a series of technical concerns involving American Airlines in recent months. On March 23, 2026, another flight-AA1360-was forced to return to O'Hare International Airport shortly after take-off while en route to Pittsburgh. Earlier, in January 2026, an Airbus A319 operating a flight to Monterey encountered a landing gear issue, requiring the crew to manually deploy the system before making an emergency landing at San Francisco International Airport.
The latest emergency also comes close on the heels of a tragic accident involving an Air Canada regional aircraft at LaGuardia Airport earlier this week. The aircraft collided with an airport vehicle, resulting in the deaths of both pilots.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the collision. Preliminary findings confirmed that the pilots who lost their lives suffered fatal blunt force injuries. Their remains were later transported back home on an Air Canada flight.
The back-to-back incidents have once again highlighted concerns around aviation safety and the increasing operational pressures faced by airlines and flight crews.
