Tehran: India's embassy in Tehran issued an urgent security advisory Tuesday, ordering its citizens across Iran to shelter in place and avoid all electrical and military infrastructure as a 48-hour window of extreme regional tension begins.
The directive comes as the Middle East teeters on the brink of a massive escalation following an ultimatum from U.S. President Donald Trump, who warned that a "whole civilisation will die tonight" if Tehran does not comply with U.S. demands to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by a midnight deadline.
The Indian advisory, dated April 7, 2026, instructs nationals to remain indoors for the next 48 hours and specifically warns against being near "all electric, military installations and upper floors of multi-storey buildings." The embassy also halted independent travel, stating that any movement on highways must be strictly coordinated with diplomatic staff.
"Those in Embassy-hired hotels should stay put indoors while maintaining regular contact with on-site embassy teams," the notice read.
The security alert follows a series of chilling statements from President Trump on his Truth Social platform. Raising the stakes of the current conflict to an existential level, Trump claimed that "47 years of extortion, corruption, and death" would end by Wednesday morning. He previously threatened to bomb Iranian civilian infrastructure, including power plants and bridges, into the "stone age" if the strategic oil waterway remained closed.
In Tehran, the atmosphere is increasingly dire. Iranian officials have reportedly urged citizens to form human chains around critical power grids, while President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that millions of Iranians are prepared for "sacrifice" as the U.S. deadline approaches.
There are approximately 8,000 Indian nationals currently in Iran. While the embassy has already facilitated the evacuation of nearly 2,000 citizens through neighboring Armenia and Azerbaijan, those remaining have been provided with emergency hotlines and urged to monitor official updates as the midnight deadline looms.
The Embassy has released the following emergency contact details for Indian nationals in need of assistance:
