Counting of votes for the Barpeta (SC) Assembly constituency began at 8 am on Monday, alongside the rest of the 126 seats in the Assam Legislative Assembly.

The process started with postal ballots, followed by EVM counting under tight security arrangements across designated centres.

Barpeta (SC) is an Assembly constituency located in Assam's Barpeta district. It forms a part of the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency. The seat covers Barpeta town along with nearby development blocks such as Barpeta, Sarukhetri, and parts of Chenga. The region reflects a blend of urban and rural areas.

As per the 2011 Census, the constituency has a population of 279,331. A significant 78.18 percent of residents live in rural areas. Scheduled Castes make up 8.82 percent of the population, while Scheduled Tribes account for 1.74 percent. The literacy rate in the constituency stands at around 70 percent.

The electorate includes 212,013 registered voters, and there are 248 polling stations. Voter participation has been notably high, with turnout reaching 88.27 percent in the 2021 Assembly elections.

2021 election outcome

In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, the Barpeta (SC) seat was won by the Indian National Congress. The party's candidate, Abdur Rahim Ahmed, secured 111,083 votes. The Asom Gana Parishad candidate, Gunindra Nath Das, finished as the runner-up with 66,364 votes. The victory margin was 44,719 votes.

Abdur Rahim Ahmed received a vote share of 61.04 percent, while Gunindra Nath Das secured 36.47 percent. The contest also included several other candidates, though their vote shares remained limited. Earlier election cycles have also seen the Congress maintain dominance in this constituency despite multi-party contests.
