BTS fans outraged: Problematic producer Diplo's role, Jin's omission rock comeback album 'Arirang'

Global K-pop phenomenon BTS is facing controversy ahead of the release of their highly anticipated fifth studio album, 'Arirang', due to the inclusion of multiple producers with problematic histories, including US producer Diplo.

The album, set for release on March 20, 2026, was revealed to feature 14 tracks with contributions from prominent international producers such as Diplo, Kevin Parker, Mike WiLL Made-It, and Ryan Tedder.

According to Koreaboo, Diplo's involvement has sparked particular outrage among fans following the resurfacing of a 2024 photo of him holding a "Rising Sun" flag, widely considered a symbol of Japanese imperialism and a deeply offensive emblem in Korea and other parts of Asia.

The picture, originally posted on Instagram, included the caption: "One day I'm gonna die, but not today. Today I'm gonna climb Mount Fuji." Many ARMYs criticised BTS's label, BIGHIT MUSIC, for collaborating with a producer linked to controversial associations, especially in light of the group's prior decision to remove a Japanese single, 'Bird', due to similar concerns.

Sexual abuse allegations and fan backlash

Diplo has faced multiple accusations of sexual abuse, including claims related to distributing revenge p*rn, and was involved in a lawsuit as recently as 2024. Fans noted that his previous collaboration on BLACKPINK member Jennie's 'Ruby' album had drawn heavy criticism, with some unfairly targeting Jennie herself. Many fans have expressed disappointment at what they see as inconsistent standards, questioning why BTS would work with a producer previously deemed unacceptable in other contexts.

Diplo contributed to five tracks on 'Arirang' and posted on X asking ARMYs to "be nice," alongside a photo with BTS members Jungkook and RM. While some fans expressed excitement for the unreleased songs, the controversy has intensified debates over ethics, accountability, and the choices made by BIGHIT MUSIC.

Jin's absence raises additional concerns

The release of the album credits also prompted criticism due to the omission of BTS member Jin from any songwriting credits, despite his history of contributing to previous albums. Fans highlighted past statements from Jin, noting that he had been actively writing songs while on tour, and criticised what they saw as a dismissive excuse that he was "busy." Some supporters have cancelled pre-orders in protest, citing the perceived mistreatment of Jin and the lack of recognition in the official press release.

Album and global events

'Arirang' will open with the track 'Body to Body', followed by songs including 'Hooligan', 'Aliens', 'FYA', '2.0', 'No 29', 'SWIM', 'Merry Go Round', 'Normal', 'Like Animals', 'they don't know 'bout us', 'One More Night', 'Please', and 'Into the Sun'.

To mark the release, Netflix and HYBE will co-host a global livestream event, 'BTS The Comeback Live | Arirang', from Gwanghwamun in Seoul on March 21. This will be the first worldwide stage reunion since all seven members completed mandatory military service.

Following the album launch, BTS will embark on the 'Arirang World Tour' (2026-2027), covering 34 regions and 82 shows across Asia, North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East.

A feature-length documentary, 'BTS: The Return', directed by Bao Nguyen, will premiere on March 27, offering behind-the-scenes access to the making of the album and the band's reunion.
