BTS releases new album 'ARIRANG' after 4-year hiatus

Seoul: K-pop supergroup BTS made a highly anticipated return on Friday with the release of their fifth studio album, ARIRANG, marking their first full-group project in nearly four years.

The 14-track album, featuring songs such as "Hooligan" and "SWIM", reflects the group's roots and identity, drawing inspiration from the traditional Korean folk song "Arirang", often regarded as an unofficial national anthem of South Korea.

Ahead of the release, member Jimin said the group focused on expressing their identity authentically through music and performance.

"We gave deep thought to our identity -- and how best to express ourselves authentically -- across the entirety of our music and performances," he said.

"As an extension of that process, we also revisited the significance of our background as a group comprised entirely of Korean members."

Comeback concert

The album launch will be followed by a major comeback concert in Seoul on Saturday, expected to draw around 260,000 attendees. The performance marks BTS's first group appearance after members completed approximately 18 months of mandatory military service.

The concert will also kick off preparations for an ambitious 82-date world tour, signalling the group's full-scale return to the global stage.

Concept rooted in history and storytelling

An animated trailer for ARIRANG references historical elements, including early recordings of the folk song by Alice Fletcher in 1896. The visuals depict Korean students travelling overseas, before transitioning to scenes of BTS performing at Gyeongbokgung Palace, the venue for their upcoming concert.

Global production with cultural focus

While the album includes collaborations with international songwriters and producers, experts note that the title and concept emphasise BTS's Korean identity, even as they continue to expand globally.

The group reportedly worked on the album in Los Angeles, blending global production styles with traditional influences.

All seven members, now aged between 28 and 33, recently completed their mandatory military service in South Korea, with several stationed near the inter-Korean border. The album marks their first project together since their hiatus began.
