Class of 1995 returns: Google CEO Sundar Pichai to deliver Stanford Commencement 2026 keynote

Stanford: Sundar Pichai, the chief executive officer of Google and Alphabet and a member of the Stanford class of 1995, has been tapped to deliver the keynote address at the university's 135th Commencement ceremony this spring.

University officials announced that Pichai, an alumnus who earned his master's degree from the institution, will speak to the graduating class on Sunday, June 14, at Stanford Stadium. Known for his forward-thinking approach to global challenges, Pichai was selected for his track record of empowering individuals through technological innovation.

"Sundar is a deeply thoughtful leader who has a vivid sense for how technology can improve society and transform individual lives. He epitomises what it means for a Stanford graduate to have a broad impact," Stanford President Jonathan Levin said in a statement. "I'm excited to hear his reflections and advice to our graduates as they take the next step into their own futures."

A Philosophy of Endurance

The selection process involved a collaboration between the university's senior class presidents and the Office of the President. Student leaders recently met with Pichai on campus to exchange perspectives on their respective Stanford experiences.

"Building a meaningful life, similar to building a world-class company, requires the mindset of running a marathon, not a sprint," said Rishi Jain, speaking on behalf of the six class presidents. "We can think of no better embodiment of that philosophy than our 2026 Commencement speaker and Google and Alphabet CEO, Sundar Pichai."

The upcoming event marks Pichai's first time delivering an in-person commencement address. His previous foray into graduation remarks occurred during the "Dear Class of 2020" virtual event on YouTube, which celebrated students and families during the height of the global pandemic.

Academic and Professional Journey

Pichai's path to leadership began in Chennai, India. After earning a degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur-where he was awarded an Institute Silver Medal-he moved to California to study materials science and engineering at Stanford. He later earned an MBA from the Wharton School, distinguished as both a Siebel and Palmer Scholar.

Since joining Google in 2004, Pichai has been a pivotal figure in the company's evolution:

  • Product Leadership: He managed the development of the Google Toolbar and Google Chrome, the latter of which became the premier global internet browser.
  • Executive Ascent: He was named CEO of Google in 2015 and took the helm of its parent company, Alphabet, in 2019.
  • Governance: He has served on Alphabet's Board of Directors since July 2017.

Homecoming and Celebration

For Pichai, the invitation serves as a poignant return to the campus that helped shape his career.

"It's a privilege to be invited by President Levin and the student class presidents to address the Stanford Class of 2026 as their commencement speaker," Pichai said. "From the first time I arrived on campus as a grad student, I knew Stanford was an extraordinary place, and it endures as a world-class centre for talent and innovation. I'm excited to celebrate this milestone with the graduates alongside their proud parents, families, and friends."

The keynote address will be the centrepiece of a weekend of festivities for the Stanford community, scheduled to run from June 11 through June 14.
