Brazil: A flight operated by Delta Air Lines from Brazil to Atlanta was forced to make an emergency return on Sunday evening, March 29, after an engine malfunction triggered a fire shortly after take-off.
The aircraft, an Airbus A330-300 operating as DL Flight 104, had departed from Sao Paulo and was headed to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. According to the airline, the crew decided to turn back soon after take-off when a technical problem was detected in the left engine.
Footage recorded by a passenger has since surfaced on social media, showing one of the aircraft's engines emitting flames moments after take-off from the airport in Brazil. The visuals have drawn attention to the seriousness of the situation, despite the safe outcome.
Delta confirmed that there were 272 passengers and four crew members on board at the time of the incident. The aircraft landed safely, and passengers were later transported to the terminal by bus.
No injuries were reported, and all individuals on board were safe.
Cause of engine issue still unclear
The exact reason behind the engine malfunction has not yet been determined. The Federal Aviation Administration stated that it would defer any further queries regarding the aircraft to authorities in South America.
Airline responds, assures passenger support
In a statement, Delta said its teams are working to assist passengers in reaching their final destinations. "Delta teams are working to reaccommodate customers to get them safely to their destination," the airline said.
Reiterating its commitment to safety, the airline added that the well-being of passengers and crew remains its top priority. It also apologised for the inconvenience caused due to the disruption in travel plans.
