New Delhi. Observed over five joyous days, Deepavali or Diwali, the festival of lights, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

Celebrated across India and in many countries with Indian-origin communities, Diwali brings families together for rituals, lights, sweets, and prayers.

When Is Diwali 2025?

This year, Diwali begins on October 18 with Dhanteras and concludes on October 22 with Bhai Dooj. The festival's main day, Lakshmi Puja, falls on October 20, coinciding with the Amavasya (new moon) Tithi of the Hindu month Kartika.

The Amavasya Tithi begins at 3.44 pm on October 20 and ends at 5.54 pm on October 21, according to the Drik Panchang.

Significance of Lakshmi Puja

The main Diwali day is dedicated to Maa Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and abundance. Devotees observe fasts, clean and decorate their homes with diyas, marigolds, mango and banana leaves, and prepare offerings of sweets and flowers.

Idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are adorned in silk and jewellery, placed on a red cloth on an elevated platform. The Pradosh Kaal, which occurs just after sunset, is considered the most auspicious period for Lakshmi Puja.
