'Doctor, not Christ': Trump deletes AI image portraying him as Jesus after religious backlash

Washington: US President Donald Trump on Monday removed a social media post featuring an image that appeared to portray him as Jesus Christ, following a backlash from religious figures who condemned the depiction as blasphemous.

The visual, shared late Sunday on the President's Truth Social platform, illustrated Trump draped in flowing red and white vestments. The image depicted him touching the brow of an apparently ill individual, with light radiating from both his hand and his head. An American flag was visible in the background, while several figures were shown looking toward the President with an air of veneration.

Medical Interpretation

The artificial intelligence-generated image was deleted on Monday morning. When questioned regarding the post, the President refuted the notion that he was intentionally mimicking Christ.

"I did post it, and I thought it was me as a doctor and had to do Red Cross," Trump informed reporters. "It's supposed to be me as a doctor, making people better. And I do make people better. I make people a lot better."

Religious Backlash

Despite the President's explanation, the post sparked sharp criticism from influential conservative Christians, a demographic that typically constitutes his core support.

"I don't know if the President thought he was being funny or if he is under the influence of some substance or what possible explanation he could have for this OUTRAGEOUS blasphemy," Megan Basham, a conservative commentator, wrote on X. "He needs to take this down immediately and ask for forgiveness from the American people and then from God."

This is not the President's first use of such imagery; during a 2023 legal proceeding, he shared a drawing depicting himself seated beside Jesus in a courtroom. Furthermore, his associates have frequently utilised messianic parallels. At a White House Easter event earlier this month, spiritual advisor Paula White-Cain compared Trump's legal challenges to the passion of Christ, stating, "You were betrayed and arrested and falsely accused. It's a familiar pattern that our Lord and Saviour showed us."

A Divine Mandate

Scholars of Christian nationalism, including Matthew Taylor of Georgetown University, suggest Trump has increasingly adopted a messianic persona since surviving an assassination attempt in July 2024. During his election victory address, the President told his followers, "Many people have told me that God spared my life for a reason, and that reason was to save our country and to restore America to greatness."

Political Fragility

The controversy arises as the President faces internal pressure regarding the war in the Middle East. Taylor noted that the image could aggravate existing tensions, particularly among Catholic voters already unsettled by the President's public feud with Pope Leo XIV over the bombardment of Iran.

"A lot of right-wing supporters were already pushing back against the war in Iran. The rift was already emerging for a lot of his Catholic base, and with the denunciations of Pope Leo, this does threaten to alienate that crowd," Taylor said.

However, other historians remain sceptical that such controversies will erode his ultimate standing. Kristin du Mez of Calvin University observed that while conservative Christians are "keeping their distance from what would clearly count as blasphemy," they are simultaneously "dodging" a total break with the President.

"What I'm not seeing is in any way suggesting that they're not going to continue supporting the man," du Mez concluded.
