Thrissur: The Ilanjithara Melam, a defining highlight of Thrissur Pooram, drew thousands even as intense heat gripped the city. The percussion ensemble, led by Kizhakkoottu Aniyan Marar, saw large crowds gather to witness the performance.
The Ilanjithara Melam remains the most prominent percussion feature of the Paramekkavu faction during Thrissur Pooram. Kizhakkoottu Aniyan Marar, an active presence in the percussion field for nearly seven decades, leads the ensemble as its pramani (chief conductor or lead percussionist).
As melam leaders and percussionists come together, the layered rhythmic presentation generates palpable excitement among spectators. Known for its discipline, the Ilanjithara Melam begins precisely on time, progresses in a structured manner, and concludes at a fixed hour.
Rather than focusing on the number of performers or duration, the Ilanjithara Melam is recognised for its orderly and methodical presentation of the traditional panchari melam format. It may be noted that the main difference between Pandimelam and Panchari Melam lies in their rhythmic structure and location of performance. While both are traditional percussion ensembles from Kerala using the chenda, Panchari Melam is strictly performed inside temple walls, whereas Pandi Melam is typically played outside temple precincts, often during large processions such as the Ilanjithara Melam.
Structured performance and traditional sequence
Ahead of the panchari melam, a chempada melam is presented in front of Paramekkavu as part of the traditional sequence. The measured progression of rhythm and tempo remains a hallmark of the performance, maintaining precision and cohesion throughout.
Pooram held with rituals only amid fireworks curbs
In the backdrop of the Mundathikode fireworks accident, the Pooram is being conducted with rituals alone, with the customary fireworks display omitted.
Festivities began with the ceremonial departure of Kanimangalam Sastha towards the Pooram venue, marking the start of the main day. Soon after, participating deities from other temples arrived. The Ilanjithara Melam, featuring around 250 artistes, commenced at 2 pm.
