Thiruvananthapuram: IP Binu, CPM Palayam local secretary and former corporation councillor, who had been absconding in connection with the alleged attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials, has been arrested.
Police reportedly traced Binu to a hotel room in Thampanoor, where he had been hiding.
However, in a Facebook post, Binu claimed that he had not been arrested but had voluntarily surrendered before the police. Visuals had earlier emerged showing Binu allegedly throwing an egg at the vehicle carrying ED officials while police officers looked on.
Police conducted a search at Binu's residence on Thursday morning after he and several others went into hiding late on Wednesday night. An extensive search operation was subsequently carried out across the city. Investigators, tracking his mobile phone, eventually located him at the hotel in Thampanoor.
Earlier, the Vanchiyoor court remanded five accused in the case to 14 days' judicial custody. They face serious charges, including attempted murder. Police have registered cases against 300 identifiable individuals in connection with the incident, of whom 12 have been formally named as accused.
