Panaji: The Goa government has imposed an immediate ban on all official foreign visits by public servants that are fully or partially funded by the government exchequer, citing the prevailing global economic situation and the need to conserve foreign exchange reserves.
The government led by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has also cancelled all previously approved foreign visits with immediate effect.
An official memorandum has been issued to ensure mandatory implementation of the order, which will remain in force until further notice.
Tourism department among frequent overseas travellers
In Goa, ministers and officials from several departments often travel abroad for study tours and official engagements.
As a major tourism-driven state, the tourism department has traditionally incurred significant expenditure on international travel, with senior officials regularly attending overseas expos and travel meetings.
The latest decision comes in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent appeal urging citizens and governments to adopt responsible economic practices amid ongoing global uncertainty.
CM Pramod Sawant cuts convoy size, shifts to EV vehicles
Responding to the Prime Minister's call, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has also reportedly reduced his security convoy by more than half.
The Chief Minister has additionally adopted the use of electric vehicles and directed the state administration to expand the EV charging infrastructure across Goa.
Officials said the move towards electric mobility could help reduce the state's carbon footprint.
PM Modi urges people to reduce fuel consumption
During a rally in Hyderabad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for collective public participation to help India deal with global economic disruptions, supply chain pressures and rising prices triggered by international conflicts.
He urged citizens to adopt responsible lifestyles, avoid unnecessary consumption and place national interest above personal convenience during the current global uncertainty.
The Prime Minister also appealed to people to significantly cut petrol and diesel consumption in order to conserve foreign exchange reserves and reduce India's dependence on fuel imports.
