Ramanattukara: Bihar opposition leader and RJD National Working President, Tejashwi Yadav, lauded Kerala's political awareness and the development policies of the Pinarayi Vijayan government, calling them a model for the rest of the country.
He was addressing a public meeting to campaign for LDF candidate Muhammad Riyas in the Beypore constituency.
Kerala's progress amid central neglect
Tejashwi highlighted Kerala's achievements despite what he described as neglect from the central government.
"While Kerala ranks first in education and healthcare, Bihar, long ruled by the BJP, continues to struggle with poverty and backwardness. I sincerely hope that Bihar can develop like Kerala," he said.
He added, "We have allied with the LDF and have come here for campaigning. We have full confidence that the LDF will win and form the government again. Kerala is a developed state compared to Bihar. We give examples of Kerala's health and education sectors. We want the LDF to form the government in Kerala."
Focus on secular governance
Tejashwi pointed out the importance of secular politics in the state. "Nationally, we have a broader INDIA alliance, but in some states, we are contesting separately. Our agenda is clear - to not allow communal forces to enter Kerala," he said.
He stressed that the alliance's priority in Kerala is to support governance that focuses on development, public welfare, and the protection of secular values.
Muhammad Riyas, who was formerly the National President of the DYFI, has led numerous youth movements across the country.
"He played a prominent role in the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in Delhi and faced police action firsthand. Through his interventions against communal policies, Riyas has emerged as a strong voice for youth politics", Tejashwi added.
His visit was acknowledged by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who posted on X, "Thank you for your solidarity and for joining the LDF's campaign in Kerala. Your presence and support strengthen our collective fight to protect our secular fabric and advance a pro-people alternative. Together, we will ensure a resounding victory for the people of Kerala."
Assembly election schedule
The Election Commission of India announced on 15 March that the 2026 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on 9 April, with the counting of votes scheduled for 4 May. The current assembly's tenure is set to end on 23 May.
The BJP-led NDA is seeking to overthrow the current Communist Party of India (Marxist)-headed Left Democratic Front (LDF) and secure a majority in the 140-member Kerala Legislative Assembly. The LDF has been in power for around ten years, with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan serving consecutive terms.
