How a social reform movement in Kerala gave Salim Kumar his distinctive name

How a social reform movement in Kerala gave Salim Kumar his distinctive name

National Award-winning Malayalam actor Salim Kumar, who died on Saturday at the age of 56, carried a name commonly associated with the Muslim community despite coming from a Hindu family background.

There is an unusual story behind it. Far from being a coincidence, the name reflected a social reform movement in Kerala that sought to break down caste and religious barriers through something as simple as naming a child.

A name rooted in social reform

In several interviews, Salim Kumar explained that his name was originally just "Salim".

The choice was influenced by the ideas of Sahodaran Ayyappan, the prominent social reformer who campaigned against caste discrimination and social hierarchy in Kerala. A close follower of Sree Narayana Guru, Ayyappan advocated a more egalitarian society and challenged social divisions based on caste and religion. His message resonated strongly among sections of society, particularly in the Kochi region, where many families began rethinking traditional naming practices.

At the time, names often revealed a person's caste or community background. To challenge this, some Hindu families deliberately chose names more commonly associated with the Muslim community.

Names such as Salim, Naushad, Jaleel, Aisha and Jameela became increasingly common among families influenced by reformist ideals. The aim was to ensure that a person's identity could not be easily placed within existing caste structures.

Salim Kumar said his parents were among those who embraced this trend, giving him a name that reflected the social climate of the period rather than religious convention.

How 'Kumar' was added

The actor recalled that his name changed after he started school.

According to Kumar, a teacher felt that the name "Salim" sounded like that of a Muslim child and suggested adding "Kumar" to it. The suggestion was accepted, and he was subsequently registered as Salim Kumar.

The addition remained with him for the rest of his life, eventually becoming one of the most recognisable names in Malayalam cinema.

Kumar said he never considered changing his name and regarded it as a good one.
