Nobody likes being added to unwanted WhatsApp groups. Earlier, leaving a group would notify every participant, often leading to awkward questions or requests to rejoin.
But WhatsApp now allows users to exit groups discreetly; only group admins are informed.
- Open the WhatsApp group chat you want to leave.
- At the top of the chat screen, tap the group name to open the Group Info page.
- Scroll down and tap 'Exit Group.'
You will see two choices:
- Exit Group:
Leaves the group quietly
Keeps the chat history on your phone
- Exit and Delete for Me:
Leaves the group removes the chat completely from your Chats list
Deletes chat history from your device
You can also choose to:
Delete all media from that chat from your phone gallery
What happens after you leave?
Even though other members won't get a notification, some information remains visible: Only group admins are notified.
- Your name and phone number stay in the Past Members list
- This information can remain visible for up to 60 days
- For rejoining a group, you must ask a group admin to invite you again
Community Groups:
If the group belongs to a WhatsApp community: Leaving the group may also remove you from the larger community
