India to store 30 mn barrels of oil in UAE: Can it help during wars, supply shocks and price spikes?

India and the United Arab Emirates have signed a major energy agreement that will allow India to secure access to up to 30 million barrels of crude oil as part of its Strategic Petroleum Reserve system.

The agreement was finalised on Friday following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the UAE and is being viewed as a significant step towards strengthening India's long-term energy security and deepening strategic cooperation between the two countries.

The deal is expected to play an important role in protecting India against future oil supply disruptions, geopolitical tensions and sudden spikes in global crude prices.

What exactly has India and UAE agreed to?

According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, several energy-related agreements were concluded between Indian energy companies and UAE entities, mainly the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

Speaking about the agreements, Misri said the two countries had taken steps to further deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership.

"We will be issuing a more detailed press release later today, but let me give you a snapshot of everything that happened during the course of this brief two-and-a-half-hour visit," he said.

He added that energy cooperation remained a central pillar of India-UAE ties.

"In the energy cooperation field, we've seen several agreements being initialled between Indian energy sector companies and UAE entities, primarily the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company," he stated.

The agreements include increasing UAE participation in India's strategic petroleum reserves to 30 million barrels, plans for strategic gas reserves in India, and long-term LPG supply arrangements.

Why is this oil storage deal important for India?

India imports more than 80 percent of its crude oil requirements, making the country highly dependent on global supply chains and international oil markets.

The new agreement gives India access to an additional 30 million barrels of crude oil stored in the UAE, creating a larger emergency reserve that can be used during crises such as wars, geopolitical conflicts, global supply disruptions or sharp increases in oil prices.

This additional reserve is expected to strengthen India's ability to maintain uninterrupted fuel supplies during difficult periods.

How can overseas oil storage help India?

Oil stored in the UAE can reach India more quickly compared to shipments arriving from faraway suppliers.

This faster access could prove critical during emergencies by helping stabilise supplies of petrol, diesel and LPG across the country.

The arrangement also adds another layer of security to India's energy infrastructure. If global shipping routes are affected or oil-producing regions face instability, India would still have access to backup reserves.

Can this help India manage oil price shocks?

Geopolitical tensions in major oil-producing regions often lead to sudden increases in crude oil prices.

By maintaining strategic reserves abroad, India gains more flexibility in handling supply shocks and reducing pressure caused by volatile international markets.

The reserve could help the country respond more effectively during periods of uncertainty, especially when oil prices rise sharply because of global conflicts or disruptions in supply chains.

India-UAE energy ties continue to grow

The agreement further strengthens energy cooperation between India and the UAE, which already share close ties in oil trade and economic partnerships.

The latest deal is expected to deepen collaboration in areas including crude oil supply, strategic reserves, energy security and long-term economic cooperation between the two countries.
