Infrastructure boost: PM Modi virtually inaugurates indoor cricket academies in Manipur, Arunachal

In a significant move for Northeast India's sporting landscape, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated state-of-the-art indoor cricket academies in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday.

Speaking from Gangtok, the Prime Minister emphasized that these facilities are vital for nurturing local talent and bolstering the region's expanding sports ecosystem.

Key highlights of the new facilities

  • Manipur (Luwangpokpa Cricket Stadium): * Features: A world-class setup including three indoor practice pitches, a dedicated gymnasium, administrative offices, and a swimming pool.

    • BCCI Support: Funded by the BCCI, the board will also cover all maintenance and operational costs for the next two years.

  • Arunachal Pradesh (Doimukh): * Joint Venture: Developed by the BCCI in collaboration with the Arunachal Cricket Association.

    • Focus: Equipped with modern practice nets and fitness centers designed to provide elite training environments.

Overcoming regional challenges

The primary advantage of these indoor facilities is the ability to bypass the Northeast's notoriously heavy monsoon seasons. Manipur Cricket Association Secretary, Lairenjam Geetranjan Singh, noted that players will no longer need to travel outside the state for training camps, as coaching can now continue uninterrupted year-round.

A growing powerhouse

The inauguration comes on the heels of a stellar 2025 season for Manipur cricket, which saw the state reach five BCCI domestic finals and secure two Under-19 titles. Notably, all representing players are homegrown local talent. Officials expressed confidence that this new infrastructure will act as a catalyst for both boys' and girls' cricket, ensuring the region remains a competitive force in Indian sports. (IANS)
