The United States Department of Justice has released a sweeping new tranche of more than three million documents linked to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, reopening scrutiny of his ties to some of the world's most powerful political, business and cultural figures.
The disclosure, made public on Friday, follows the Justice Department's failure to meet a legally mandated December 19 deadline set under the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Officials say the release includes raw investigative material - emails, tip-line submissions, prison records and files related to Epstein's longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell - much of it unverified or disputed.
Authorities have stressed that the appearance of a name in the documents does not imply wrongdoing. None of the individuals mentioned have been charged with crimes in connection with Epstein's sex trafficking case, and many have strongly denied allegations or distanced themselves from him.
Still, the newly released records provide the most expansive public view yet of Epstein's interactions after his 2008 conviction for soliciting sex from a minor and before his death in a New York jail cell in 2019.
Allegations, emails and explicit warnings
Justice Department officials cautioned that the material consists largely of untested claims, many drawn from FBI tip-line submissions that investigators later deemed unsubstantiated, lacking corroboration or not credible.
ABC News reported that many callers could not be recontacted, while the DOJ itself warned that some records contain "untrue and sensationalist claims." Redactions were made to protect the identities of more than 1,000 alleged victims and to safeguard ongoing investigations.
Bill Gates claims rejected as 'absolutely absurd'
Among the documents are draft emails attributed to Epstein alleging that Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates complained of contracting a sexually transmitted disease after encounters with "Russian women" and sought antibiotics to conceal it from then-wife Melinda Gates.
It remains unclear whether the email was ever sent. Gates' spokesperson dismissed the allegations outright, describing them as "absolutely absurd and completely false," and suggesting the claims reflected Epstein's frustration after Gates cut ties with him.
Trump referenced hundreds of times
US President Donald Trump is mentioned repeatedly across the files, including in summaries of allegations submitted to the FBI by members of the public.
TMZ reported that one document includes an unverified allegation that Trump forced an underage girl to perform oral sex decades ago. The Justice Department has said such submissions are often unfounded, reiterating that inclusion does not amount to evidence or confirmation.
Elon Musk emails raise new questions
Emails from 2012 and 2013 show Tesla founder Elon Musk discussing possible visits to Epstein's private Caribbean island and asking about the "wildest party." There is no evidence that Musk ever travelled to the island.
Musk has denied any wrongdoing and has not been accused of crimes related to Epstein.
He added that Epstein had tried to persuade him to visit the island and fly on his private jet, claims the emails appear to complicate but do not conclusively contradict.
Prince Andrew appears extensively
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, is referenced several hundred times in the newly released files, including in Epstein's private correspondence.
The documents include invitations for Epstein to dine at Buckingham Palace, offers to introduce Andrew to a 26-year-old Russian woman, and photographs appearing to show him kneeling over an unidentified woman.
Andrew has long denied allegations made by Virginia Roberts Giuffre that he had sex with her when she was 17. Despite his denials, King Charles III stripped him of his remaining royal titles late last year.
Business leaders and social ties under scrutiny
The files detail extensive correspondence between Epstein and several prominent business figures:
- Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, exchanged emails with Epstein years after his 2008 conviction. In one message, Branson invited Epstein to his private island, writing: "As long as you bring your harem!" Virgin Group said Branson later declined a donation and severed contact after learning of serious allegations.
- Steven Tisch, co-owner of the New York Giants, appears more than 400 times in the documents. Emails show Epstein offering to connect him with women. Tisch acknowledged the correspondence but said he deeply regretted the association.
- Sergey Brin, Google co-founder, was invited to dinners and events by Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell in 2003, before Epstein's crimes were publicly known.
- Casey Wasserman, head of the LA 2028 Olympics committee, exchanged flirtatious emails with Maxwell. He said the correspondence predated knowledge of her crimes and that he never had a relationship with Epstein.
Political figures and diplomatic fallout
Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak appears frequently in the files, with records showing repeated meetings and travel on Epstein's private jet even after his conviction. Barak has said he never witnessed inappropriate behaviour.
In Slovakia, national security adviser Miroslav Lajcak resigned after photos and emails revealed meetings with Epstein following his release from jail. He has not been accused of wrongdoing and said the contacts were diplomatic in nature.
In India, the government rejected any implication involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi after his name appeared in an email reference, describing the allusions as "trashy ruminations by a convicted criminal."
Indian-born filmmaker Mira Nair, and the mother of New York City's newly sworn-in mayor, Zohran Mamdani, was also featured in a newly released email. The email, dated October 21, 2009, was reportedly sent by publicist Peggy Siegal to Epstein following a film-related event. It refers to Nair attending an after-party at the Manhattan townhouse of Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's longtime associate who was later convicted on sex trafficking charges.
Rap icon Jay-Z's name has surfaced in a new batch of documents released by the US Justice Department on Friday relating to Jeffrey Epstein. His name appears in a 2019 report submitted to an FBI tip line. He is not the only high-profile figure referenced; Pusha T and disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein are also mentioned. The unlikely grouping - and Weinstein's well-known criminal history - has prompted fresh scrutiny over why Jay-Z's name appears in the material.
Lutnick island visit contradicts earlier claims
Emails show that US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and his family planned a visit to Epstein's private island in December 2012, contradicting earlier statements that he had cut ties decades earlier.
A Commerce Department spokesperson said Lutnick had "limited interactions with Mr Epstein in the presence of his wife and has never been accused of wrongdoing."
Survivors say abusers still shielded
Despite the scale of the disclosure, survivors of Epstein's abuse say critical information remains withheld.
In a joint statement, 19 survivors said details about them were still present in the files "while the men who abused us remain hidden and protected." They called for full transparency and demanded that Attorney General Pam Bondi address the issue when she testifies before Congress next month.
What are the Epstein Files?
The controversy surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein files has flared anew following remarks by billionaire Elon Musk suggesting US President Donald Trump has a deeper connection to the documents than previously disclosed.
The Epstein files comprise a vast collection of documents, videos and investigative records assembled over years of probes into the disgraced financier and his associates. The material includes witness accounts, financial records, personal diaries, flight manifests and other evidence that has fuelled speculation about Epstein's network and those who moved within it.
That evidence list details the recovery of electronic devices such as computers, hard drives and memory sticks, along with recording equipment. It also references a CD labelled "girl pics nude book 4" and a photo album described as "photo album of girl and Epstein." Investigators further documented the seizure of several massage tables, copper handcuffs and a whip.
DOJ defends delay, cites victim protection
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the release marked "the end of a very comprehensive document identification and review process," attributing the delay to extensive redactions needed to protect victims.
The disclosure includes more than three million pages, 2,000 videos and 180,000 images. Epstein died by suicide in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
