JEE Main result 2026 likely on April 20: Check eligibility rules

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is expected to announce the results of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2026 on April 20, according to an official press release.

Candidates who appeared for the exam will be able to access their scorecards through the official portal once the results are declared.

The JEE Main examination serves as a gateway for admission to premier technical institutions across India, including the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs).

Several state-funded and private engineering colleges also consider JEE Main scores for admissions.

Importantly, JEE Main also determines eligibility for JEE Advanced 2026, the entrance exam for admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The JEE Advanced 2026 is scheduled to be conducted on May 17.

Advanced eligibility rules

To appear for JEE Advanced 2026, candidates must fulfil the following criteria:

  1. Performance in JEE Main 2026: Candidates must be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (across all categories) in the BE/BTech paper.
  2. Age limit: Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 2001. A relaxation of five years is provided to SC, ST, and PwD candidates.
  3. Number of attempts: A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times, and only in two consecutive years.
  4. Class 12 or equivalent examination: Candidates must have appeared for their Class 12 (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2025 or 2026, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
  5. Earlier admission at IITs: Candidates who have previously been admitted to an IIT under any academic programme are not eligible, irrespective of whether they continued or withdrew. Those whose admission was cancelled after joining are also not eligible.

The JEE Advanced examination will be conducted by the seven Zonal Coordinating IITs under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board 2026.

The exam will consist of two compulsory papers of three hours each, and candidates must appear for both.

With the result announcement expected soon, candidates are advised to keep their login credentials ready and regularly check the official website for updates.
