Kozhikode: The first day of Ramadan 2026 in Kerala will be observed on Thursday, February 19, after the crescent moon was not sighted on Tuesday evening, religious leaders announced.
Panakkad Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal and other prominent qazis, including representatives of Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar, confirmed that Ramadan fasting in Kerala will begin on Thursday. With the moon not sighted, the faithful will complete 30 days of Sha'ban (eighth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar) before commencing the holy month of Ramadan.
Kerala Hilal Committee Chairman P P Unneenkutty Moulavi also officially declared that the first fast of Ramadan will be observed on February 19.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, begins with the sighting of the crescent moon. As the lunar cycle lasts around 29.5 days, the exact start date varies by country depending on local moon visibility.
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib), abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs. Fasting hours differ slightly throughout the month due to changing sunrise and sunset times, with early Ramadan days expected to see fasts of roughly 13 to 14 hours.
The month is also marked by spiritual reflection and community traditions. Families come together each day for Iftar, often breaking the fast with dates and water before enjoying traditional meals. Mosques see increased attendance, particularly for Taraweeh and late-night prayers.
Charitable giving is a key aspect of Ramadan. Muslims are encouraged to fulfil Zakat (mandatory almsgiving) and engage in voluntary acts of kindness. Community initiatives, such as free Iftar meals and donation drives, typically attract widespread participation.
