Kerala elections 2026: Polling booth surveillance strengthened in Kannur

Kannur: In a major move to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections, authorities have installed comprehensive camera surveillance across all polling booths in Kannur ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

A total of 2,177 polling stations in the district will feature 100 per cent webcasting, with cameras installed both inside polling booths and at their entrances. The system is designed to monitor voter movement, maintain order, and prevent any electoral malpractices.

Election officials said the installation is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed well before polling day.

A two-tier control system will oversee real-time monitoring. At the district level, a central control room at the Kannur Collectorate will manage live feeds from all polling stations. In addition, separate control rooms in each Assembly constituency will operate under the supervision of the respective Returning Officers.

Election observers appointed by the Election Commission of India will periodically visit constituency-level control rooms to assess system functionality and ensure strict adherence to election protocols.

Specialised training programmes have been conducted for personnel managing technical operations, with trained staff deployed at each polling station to resolve any technical issues and oversee the smooth functioning of the webcasting system.

All voting across Kannur will be recorded and securely stored on hard drives, which will then be handed over to the State Chief Electoral Officer for verification and record-keeping.

Authorities expressed confidence that enhanced surveillance will strengthen electoral integrity and reassure voters and stakeholders of a transparent and orderly polling process.

Kannur has historically witnessed political clashes resulting in fatalities among party workers and leaders, including those from the Bharatiya Janata Party-RSS, Congress, CPI(M), and the Muslim League. In view of this sensitive background, comprehensive camera monitoring has been prioritised across all polling booths.
