Kerala imposes electricity regulation; 15-30 minute power cuts, SMS alerts to be sent in advance

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has announced electricity regulation across the state under a "peak load management" system, with scheduled power cuts of 15 to 30 minutes.

Consumers will be informed in advance through SMS alerts before the power interruptions are implemented, KSEB said, urging public cooperation in managing electricity usage during peak hours.

According to KSEB, the state is currently witnessing electricity demand that is "beyond expectations." The department said it is making continuous efforts to ensure an uninterrupted supply by maximising internal generation and purchasing power from outside sources.

"The transmission and distribution network is also under significant pressure due to the sharp rise in demand. In some areas, voltage drops are being experienced. Efforts are being made to address such issues through network reconfiguration and other measures to minimise inconvenience to consumers," KSEB said.

The board noted that electricity consumption has surged due to extreme summer conditions. Peak-hour usage on April 18 reached an all-time high of 117.16 million units. Electricity demand between 6 pm and 10 pm also touched a record 6,033 MW. On April 23, demand peaked at 6,195 MW for one minute at 10:30 pm.

KSEB has appealed to consumers to reduce electricity usage between 6 pm and 11 pm to ease the temporary crisis. It has specifically requested limiting the use of high-consumption appliances such as pump sets, induction stoves, water heaters, irons, washing machines, air conditioners, and electric vehicle charging during peak hours.

Consumers have also been advised to set air conditioners between 24-26°C and switch off unnecessary lights and appliances. KSEB said such measures would help avoid peak-hour power shortages and also reduce electricity bills.
