Kochi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for five districts in northern Kerala, warning of extremely heavy rainfall on June 6.
As a precautionary measure, district administrations in Kasaragod, Wayanad and Kozhikode have declared a holiday for educational institutions, while authorities have urged residents to remain alert amid fears of flooding, landslides and travel disruptions as monsoon conditions intensify across the state.
Educational institutions across Kasaragod, Wayanad and Kozhikode will remain closed on Saturday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall in northern Kerala. District administrations announced the precautionary closures as monsoon conditions intensified across the state.
Five districts under highest rainfall warning
The IMD has placed Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod under red alert for June 6. The weather department has forecast extremely heavy rainfall, with some areas expected to receive more than 20 centimetres of rain within a 24-hour period.
Officials warned that the intense rainfall could lead to flooding, landslides, waterlogging and disruptions to transportation and essential services.
Kasaragod shuts schools, colleges and anganwadis
Kasaragod District Collector K Inbasekar declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including schools, professional colleges, anganwadis, tuition centres, CBSE and ICSE schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, madrasas and other religious educational institutions.
The administration clarified that residential schools are exempt from the order. University examinations, public examinations and interviews scheduled earlier will be conducted as planned.
Wayanad announces holiday amid heavy rain threat
Authorities in Wayanad also ordered the closure of educational institutions in view of the heavy rainfall warning.
The holiday applies to schools, professional colleges, anganwadis, tuition centres, special classes and religious educational institutions. Residential schools have been excluded from the closure order.
The district, which has several landslide-prone regions, remains under close monitoring as rainfall activity increases.
Kozhikode takes precautionary measures
In Kozhikode, officials announced a holiday for schools, colleges, tuition centres, madrasas and anganwadis after considering the red alert, ongoing waterlogging in several areas and forecasts of continued heavy rain and strong winds.
Authorities said the decision was aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring public safety during adverse weather conditions.
Authorities warn of floods and landslides
Disaster management officials have cautioned that extremely heavy rainfall may trigger flash floods, overflowing rivers, landslides in hilly regions and traffic disruptions. Residents living in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
Emergency response teams have been placed on alert across northern Kerala as authorities prepare for potential weather-related emergencies.
Public advised to avoid unnecessary travel
Officials have urged people to avoid non-essential travel, particularly in areas prone to flooding and landslides. Residents have also been advised to stay updated through official weather bulletins and instructions issued by local administrations.
With monsoon activity expected to remain strong over the weekend, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and take preventive measures to minimise risks to life and property.
