'Makes no sense': Aaron Finch blasts Axar Patel for benching himself and Kuldeep in DC's loss to SRH

'Makes no sense': Aaron Finch blasts Axar Patel for benching himself and Kuldeep in DC's loss to SRH

Hyderabad: Despite boasting one of the most formidable spin tandems in the Indian Premier League, Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel and wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav combined for a mere four overs during their defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday.

The decision to underutilise the pair, composed of Patel's defensive precision and Yadav's deceptive wristspin, has drawn sharp criticism from observers, including former Australian captain Aaron Finch. While the duo was sidelined for much of the match, part-time offspinner Nitish Rana was tasked with completing his full four-over quota.

"We've been sitting there scratching our heads, haven't we?" Finch remarked on ESPNcricinfo's Time Out show. "Your two Indian premier spin bowlers... they bowled four overs between them. A part-time offspinner in Nitish Rana has wheeled out four overs. To me, that makes no sense."

Tactical Hesitation

Rana, returning to the lineup after missing two games, opened the bowling in an effort to take pace off the ball and turn it away from Sunrisers' left-handed openers, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. Because both Patel and Yadav turn the ball into left-handers, Patel opted for a cautious approach as Sharma batted through the innings for an unbeaten 135.

Finch, however, argued that Patel's status as a veteran and a "double World Cup winner" should have dictated a more assertive role. He suggested that the captain's reluctance to bowl against left-handers reflected poorly on his mindset.

"The fact that he doesn't trust himself to execute under pressure and to defend himself against any left-handers... to me that says more about his attitude towards it than anything else," Finch said.

Statistically, Patel held a significant advantage over Sharma, having previously dismissed the opener twice in just eight deliveries. Finch noted that Patel's height and ability to vary angles serve as attacking tools even when his primary focus is defensive. "You bowl a couple of decent balls, and you know that something will happen," he added.

Post-Match Reflections

Following the loss, Patel stated that the bowling unit failed to execute its established plans, noting that little can be done when execution falters. Finch took issue with these comments, suggesting the captain had the opportunity to lead by example.

"I've no issue with mis-execution... but you had the chance as well, but you're not willing to stand up at the moment either," Finch said.

Faf du Plessis also weighed in on the controversy, noting that critics would have been more forgiving if Patel had bowled and conceded runs rather than avoiding the responsibility entirely. He pointed out that while Yadav's limited overs (2 for 30) might be attributed to a struggle with length, Patel possesses the specific skills-including bowling around the wicket to left-handers-to have managed the crisis.

"I'm still going to Axar as that guy because Axar has got lots of skills with the ball," du Plessis said. "He's got tricks."

The reliance on Rana, who had only bowled his full quota once before in 121 IPL appearances, remains the focal point of the Capitals' tactical post-mortem as they look to rebound from the heavy defeat.
