Kolkata: In a stunning reversal of fortunes that echoed the 2021 Nandigram showdown, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari defeated West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her own stronghold of Bhabanipur on Monday.
The high-profile victory comes amid a significant electoral shift toward the BJP across the state.
Election Commission data confirms that Adhikari secured the seat by a margin of 15,105 votes, overcoming an early and substantial lead held by the TMC supremo.
The final tally
The contest remained a see-saw battle until the final rounds:
- Suvendu Adhikari: 73,917 votes
- Mamata Banerjee: 58,812 votes
Addressing the media after receiving his winning certificate, Adhikari expressed his gratitude, "I thank the people of Bhabanipur for voting for me and ensuring a margin of over 15,000 votes."
A dramatic turnaround
The day began with Banerjee appearing to be on a clear path to victory. By the conclusion of the seventh round, she held a commanding lead of over 17,000 votes. However, as the counting progressed into the later rounds, Adhikari began to chip away at that advantage.
By the 14th round, the Chief Minister's lead had dwindled to fewer than 4,000 votes. In a tense finale, Adhikari overtook Banerjee to secure the win, effectively mirroring his 2021 triumph in Nandigram.
Allegations of irregularities
The atmosphere at the Sakhawat Memorial Government Girls' High School counting center remained electric, with both candidates present. As the results shifted in favour of the BJP, Banerjee voiced strong opposition to the process, accusing the Election Commission of bias.
"Do you think this is a victory? It is an immoral victory. More than 100 seats have been looted. The Election Commission is the BJP's commission," Banerjee stated.
The Chief Minister further claimed that her counting agents were intimidated and that she personally faced harassment inside the venue, alleging the mandate had been "manipulated". Neither the Election Commission nor the BJP has issued a formal response to these claims yet.
