Thrissur (Kerala): The Congress party has moved against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging a breach of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
The complaint centres on the Prime Minister's televised address to the nation on Saturday night regarding the Women's Reservation Bill.
Anil Akkara, a prominent Congress leader and AICC member, submitted the formal complaint to the Central Election Commission. The petition alleges that the Prime Minister utilised Central Government machinery and state-run broadcasting resources for political campaigning while the Model Code of Conduct was in active force.
The address was broadcast via Doordarshan, during which the Prime Minister reportedly levelled political criticisms against the opposition. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also joined the criticism, asserting that the Prime Minister misused an official platform for partisan gain. Kharge pointed out that the speech, delivered following the status of the Women's Reservation Bill, served as a tool to attack political rivals rather than addressing the core issues of the legislation.
According to the opposition, the Prime Minister mentioned the Congress party 59 times during his address, while allegedly failing to provide substantial focus on the specific concerns of women. The complaint urges the Election Commission to take action against the use of official government platforms for political targeting during an election period.
