Nagpur: A massive explosion at an industrial explosives factory in Maharashtra's Nagpur district killed at least 17 people and left 18 others critically injured on Sunday morning, according to local authorities.

The blast occurred at SBL Energy Limited, a manufacturer specialising in mining and industrial explosives, located in the Raulgaon area of Katol tehsil. Senior police officials confirmed that the death toll, initially reported as lower, rose as rescue teams reached the site.

Representatives for SBL Energy Limited told reporters that the incident took place within the company's detonator packing unit between 7:00 a.m. and 7:15 a.m.

Rescue Operations and Emergency Response

A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was dispatched to the scene to lead the search for survivors amidst the wreckage.

  • Medical Aid: Those injured in the blast were immediately transported to a government hospital in Nagpur for urgent treatment.
  • On-Site Coordination: District Collector Vipin Itankar and Superintendent of Police Harssh Poddar arrived at the factory shortly after the explosion to oversee the emergency response and coordinate with company management.
  • Company Statement: A spokesperson for SBL Energy stated that internal rescue efforts were underway and that a formal statement detailing the cause of the accident would be released following a preliminary investigation.

Ongoing Safety Concerns

The tragedy in Nagpur comes just one day after a similar disaster in Andhra Pradesh's Kakinada district, where an explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit claimed 21 lives. The back-to-back incidents have renewed scrutiny over safety protocols within India's explosives and pyrotechnics industries.

While the exact cause of the SBL Energy blast remains unknown, police noted that the factory, which spans over 225 acres, produces a wide range of sensitive materials, including detonators and emulsion explosives. Authorities have cordoned off the facility as safety experts begin a formal inquiry into whether operational negligence played a role in the disaster.
