Next-gen vehicle testing arrives in Kerala: How automated stations will change inspections

Kollam, Kerala: Kerala is set to establish 28 automated testing stations for vehicle fitness inspections, with nine run by the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) and 19 through private participation.

The stations will operate in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

All vehicle-related testing will now be conducted at these stations. Modern automated systems will be installed to test both new vehicles and vehicles over 15 years old for registration renewal. Vehicles will be driven into a building equipped with a fully monitored camera and sensor system and held for 15 to 25 minutes for testing.

The inspections will include visual checks, brake tests, suspension tests, steering alignment, speedometer, emissions, underbody and noise tests. Vehicles that pass all six stages, including road fitness, safety and smoke emission checks, will be issued a fitness certificate. High-resolution cameras, a central data server linked to the vehicle database, and an automated report generation system will also be installed.

Vehicle owners will receive inspection results directly on their phones, including notifications of any major deficiencies. With fully automated inspections, the role of MVD officials will be minimal, ensuring efficiency and transparency.

Previously, vehicle inspections were conducted manually, relying solely on the experience of MVD officials. The new automated stations will phase out this method entirely, ensuring vehicles with technical defects are removed from the roads, reducing road accidents and curbing corruption. The system will also ease the workload of Motor Vehicle Department officials significantly.
