Srinagar: An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in the Ganderbal district of central Kashmir on Tuesday night, following a targeted anti-terror operation in the region.
The joint team, comprising the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, initiated a "cordon and search operation" (CASO) in the Arahama area after receiving specific intelligence regarding the presence of militants. During the tactical sweep of the forest area, troops observed suspicious movement and challenged the suspects.
"During the search, vigilant troops observed suspicious activity. On being challenged, terrorists opened fire and own troops retaliated," the Indian Army's Chinar Corps stated in a post on X. "Operation is in progress."
Escalation and Reinforcements
The situation intensified as the initial search transitioned into a firefight. Reports from the ground indicate that gunshots were heard echoing from the cordoned-off woods, prompting authorities to rush additional reinforcements to the site to seal all possible escape routes.
Official sources suggest that two to three terrorists are currently trapped within the security dragnet. While the heavy exchange of fire has created a tense atmosphere in the district, no casualties have been officially reported as of Tuesday night.
Ongoing Operation
The operation, dubbed "Op Arahama," remains active as security personnel maintain a tight vigil over the perimeter. Local officials have restricted movement in the immediate vicinity of the search area to ensure public safety and to facilitate the ongoing tactical engagement.
"Reinforcements have been rushed to the spot," an official confirmed, adding that further details regarding the identity or affiliation of the trapped militants are still awaited.
