'Please use headphones': Indian Railways enforces new noise control guidelines for passengers

Payyannur (Kerala): The Indian Railway Board has intensified its campaign for onboard etiquette to ensure a more comfortable journey for all.

As part of this initiative, Railways has issued a direct appeal to passengers: "Please use headphones". The This instruction comes as loud audio from mobile phones, tablets, and laptops has become a major nuisance to fellow travellers.

The decision follows an increase in complaints regarding passengers speaking loudly on their phones, listening to music or watching movies without earphones.

This directive is a response to the evolving nature of travel in the digital age, where the frequent use of mobile phones, tablets, and laptops has led to a huge rise in "acoustic tension" between commuters. As high-speed data becomes more accessible, the tendency for passengers to stream media or take calls on speakerphone has become a primary source of conflict, prompting authorities to intervene.

Strict enforcement of night-time protocols

In addition to digital etiquette, the Railways have reiterated the mandatory "Quiet Hours" observed in reserved coaches from 10 pm to 6 am. During this period, strict regulations are enforced to protect the rest of passengers. All main cabin lights must be switched off, leaving only the dim night lights active, and loud conversations are strictly prohibited. These rules also extend to railway staff, including TTEs and catering crews, to ensure minimal disruption.

The Railway Department has warned that those found repeatedly flouting these guidelines or causing a persistent nuisance will face firm disciplinary action under the Railway Act.
