Post-poll row: UDF alleges unauthorised access to strong room in Kozhikode; officials deny claim

Kozhikode: The United Democratic Front (UDF) has alleged that a strong room storing voting machines was opened at JDT College in Vellimadukunnu, Kozhikode, prompting demands for direct inspection by candidates.

Election authorities, however, rejected the claim, stating no such room was accessed.

It may be noted that the Assembly polls were held on April 9, with results for all 140 constituencies to be declared on May 4. The LDF is aiming for a third term, the UDF for a comeback, and the NDA to open its account in the state.

UDF flags 'unauthorised' access

UDF claimed the strong room was opened without proper authorisation and without informing candidates. The allegation centres on the facility where voting machines were stored, with the UDF questioning how access was granted.

The front reiterated that any such action must follow due procedure, including prior intimation to all stakeholders. It maintained that candidates were not informed in advance about the development.

Candidates cite lack of prior notice

"There was a clear understanding that the room could not be opened without proper notice. It was also agreed that any action would be taken only after explaining the reason. However, that did not happen," said UDF candidate from Perambra, Fathima Thahiliya.

She said the returning officer had informed her by phone about opening the room and asked her at 8 am on Monday to reach by 9 am. By 11 am, she had sent a representative, but the room had already been opened.

Security concerns raised; officials deny claim

UDF leaders termed the development a security lapse and alleged an attempt at interference, calling for tighter security measures and action against officials.

"There has been a security lapse. This is an attempt at interference. The area should be placed under BSF security. The spare room near the strong room must be completely sealed," said DCC president K. Praveenkumar.

The front also raised concerns about a room near the strong room being opened, alleging the possibility of electoral interference. It said materials should not be stored adjacent to the strong room and claimed that state government staff and Kerala Police entered an area meant only for central forces.

Election authorities denied that the strong room had been opened. The Perambra returning officer said the reports were incorrect. Officials clarified that an unsealed room was opened in the presence of candidates' agents to update software data, and asserted that no room containing voting machines or postal ballots was accessed
