Railway authorities mull extension of Palakkad - Kannur Express to either Kasaragod or Mangaluru

Nileshwar: Commuters in northern Kerala may soon see improved rail connectivity, as railway officials are exploring plans to extend the Palakkad-Kannur Express (16611) further north to either Kasaragod or Mangaluru.

The news of such discussions was confirmed by Madhukar Raut, the Palakkad Railway Divisional Manager (DRM).

The discussions took place during a high-level consultative meeting with the Nileshwar Railway Development Collective (NRDC). This move is seen as a response to growing demand for better transit links across the Malabar region.

Madhukar Raut also highlighted the early success of the recently inaugurated Amrit Bharat Express, running between Mangaluru Junction and Nagercoil Junction. "The service has received a fantastic response from the public," he noted, adding that the division would formally recommend increasing the frequency of the train should the high passenger turnout persist.
Station upgrades and modernisation

Beyond rail services, Nileshwar station itself is set for a major facelift. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Arun Thomas outlined several infrastructure projects aimed at improving passenger comfort and station utility.

Key developments include:

  • New accommodation: The construction of a dedicated dormitory facility atop the existing main station building.

  • Retail and parking: The current roadside parking area is to be repurposed into a hub for multi-purpose commercial stalls. To accommodate this, all vehicle parking will be shifted to a nearly-completed complex on the western side of the station.

  • Leisure and comfort: A synthetic turf is under construction at the northern end of the new parking site. Furthermore, once a new station building is commissioned, the current premises will be refurbished to house air-conditioned lounges for upper-class travellers.

The meeting, which focused on the long-term development of the local rail network, was attended by senior railway officials including Additional DRM S. Jayakrishnan, as well as NRDC President N. Sadasivan and other local representatives.

The proposed changes are expected to considerably enhance the travel experience for thousands of daily commuters while boosting the commercial profile of Nileshwar station.
