The 2026 edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has fast become a goldmine for social media satirists, though for all the wrong reasons.
Barely a week into the tournament, the league has been plagued by a series of embarrassments, ranging from a mass exodus of overseas stars to grave ball-tampering allegations involving national icons Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Afridi, and Haris Rauf.
The latest wave of mockery followed Karachi Kings' five-wicket victory over Rawalpindi on Thursday. While Azam Khan's explosive 74 off 34 balls earned him the 'Player of the Match' accolade, the post-match ceremony descended into a comedy of errors. An abrupt downpour sent presenters scrambling for cover, leaving Azam stranded until former West Indies star Carlos Brathwaite stepped in to gallantly hold an umbrella over him. The sight prompted one netizen to remark, "Just Pakistan things for you," while another dubbed the event "something you've never seen before."

The farcical atmosphere extended to an on-field exchange involving David Warner. The Australian veteran, who anchored Karachi's 198-run chase with a solid 50, was seen in a seemingly heated discussion with teammates, requiring Team Director Haider Azhar to intervene. Addressing the online chatter, Warner later clarified he was simply telling Azhar to prioritise sportsmanship.

With matches restricted to just two venues due to a national fuel crisis, and even the ball mysteriously turning pink in the opener, a few critics have mocked the tournament, calling it the 'Petrol Shortage League'.
For a competition striving for elite status, the constant stream of 'meme material' suggests the PSL is currently a bigger hit on social media than it is on the cricket pitch. (With inputs from Agencies)
